Abstract

1427816 Railway vehicle undercarriages AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc 17 July 1973 [18 July 1972] 34057/73 Heading B7L A railway car bogie has a transverse bolster 20 each end of which is resiliently supported between vertical columns 16 of spaced side frames 10, each bolster end defining pockets 28 on both sides thereof which each receive a respective wedge-shaped friction shoe 32, with compressed springs 44 urging the shoes 32 into wedging frictional engagement with the pockets and with friction plates 40 on the columns 16, and openings 46 in the bolster end wall through each of which a surface 42 of a respective shoe 32 is viewable, thus providing visible indication of shoe wear. Each opening 46 comprises an upper portion and a larger lower portion, and when a shoe 32 is sufficiently worn for its surface 42 to be level with the borderline between the two portions, a shim may be inserted between surface 42 and spring 44. In another form, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), the opening 46 is a vertical slot and the shoe carries a pointer (62) protruding through the slot.
