Abstract

517,806. Electron multipliers. RADIOAKT.- GES. D. S. LOEWE. Feb. 14, 1938, No. 246S7/39. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1937. Divided out of 512,711. [Class 39 (i)] A photo-electric cathode of an electronmultiplier is cooled to below room temperature to diminish " shot effect." For that purpose the cathode 1, which is preferably concave, is formed as the under surface of a Dewar flask 11, which can be filled with liquid air, the vacuum jacket of the flaskbeing formed by part of the multiplier envelope. The outside of the vessel 11 is coated with material inactive photo-electrically, such as copper, and the envelope may have a lining 10c of silver or copper ; these coatings are kept at cathode potential or somewhat higher. The first of the concentrating electrodes 3 is attached to the flask 11 by thick copper supports 12 so as to be cooled, and may be blackened externally to cool the first multiplying electrode 2 by radiation. The space between the electrodes 1 and 2 is screened from the wall of the tube by a conducting net 8, and an annular screen Sa may be arranged at the end of a coating 8b which is furnished with a rounded edge 9 to diminish discharge.
