Abstract

516,101. Cutting and crushing grass. CARR, R. G. June 20, 1938, No. 33170. Divided out of 516,069, [Group XIII] [Class 59] [Also in Group I] Grass is cut prior to and during a drying process by a severing or crushing action without rubbing the tissues or surface cells by means of a pair of rolls 1, 2 geared together by double helical on herringbone teeth 3. The lower or driving roll 2 makes contact on the leading surface of its tooth with the trailing surface of the tooth of the roll 1, thereby preventing moisture from being passed to the delivery side of the rolls. The grass is fed by a roller 4 across a bridge piece 5. The crushed and severed grass is cleaned out of the gaps between the teeth by lengths of chain 6 connected to a rotating shaft. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with the grass dryer described in Specification 516,069.
