Abstract

515,020. Lubricating. MORTIER, H. May 20, 1938, Nos. 15151 and 15152. Convention dates, July 22,1937, and Sept. 28,1937. [Class 12 (iii)] In an aircraft or other engine the oil radiator 14 is in thermal contact over a large surface with the tank 6 from which the engine draws in its supply of lubricant. As shown, hot oil from the engine returns at 8 to a regulator 7 located within the oil tank 6. The regulator is of the kind described in Specification 477,939. Air present in the oil separates out and escapes through perforations 10 and a vent pipe 11. If the oil is relatively cold the throttle 18 is open and the warm oil returns to the engine by a pipe 13. As the oil warms up the throttle 18 gradually closes and more of the oil ascends round the outside of the pipe 12 of the regulator and passes through a pipe 16 to the radiator 14. If the oil in the radiator is congealed oil in the pipe 16 passes to the tank 6 through small holes 17. The oil in the radiator 14 is warmed by that in the tank 6. Ultimately the throttle 18 closes and the oil in the pipe 16 passes through the radiator 14 and thence through a duct 19 and the tank 6 to the outlet 13. The tank 6 which has ribs 15 may have inclined air ducts 26 extending therethrough so that much air passes through these ducts when the aeroplane is rising and little when the aeroplane is diving.
