Abstract
513,780. Liquid-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 12, 1938, No. 7744. Convention date, March 12, 1937. [Class 38 (v)] A liquid-blast circuit-breaker comprises a plurality of movable contact-members 5, 6, 7, pivoted in a pressure-confining casing 4 at 5<1>, 6', 7', and co-operating with fixed contacts 9, 10, 11, connection 16, 17 connecting these breaks in series and connection 12 connecting contact 7 to the butt contact 13. The operating carriage 8, guided at 20, has struts 22 between which and the contacts 5 &c. are springs 21 biassing the contacts closed, whereas pins 8<1> on the carriage 8 move the contacts open. The breaks take place adjacent three pairs of ports 30 shielded by arc-resisting material 30<1>, but the ports adjacent contacts 6, 10 may be omitted if a high chamberpressure is desired. The opening bias is provided by a spring 18 acting on a plate 25 on the carriage, and the contact 13 has a limited sliding movement under spring-action 26 within the plate 25. The breaks within the chamber 4 are preferably, but not necessarily, formed simultaneously. A subsequent isolating break is established between contact 13 and a co-operating contact 2' on the movable member 2 which bridges a pair of structures similar to that shown.
