Abstract
512,907. Recovering sulphuric acid. TITLESTAD, N., ALLEN, L. N., and CHEMICAL. CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION. March 18, 1938, No. 8477. [Class 1(ii)] Denitrated spent sulphuric acid is decolorized by blowing superheated steam, either alone or in admixture with other hot gases, into a hot body of the acid which has been previously concentrated to about 90-96 per cent. strength. Spent denitrated acid of about 65 per cent., strength is continuously admitted at 20 into a concentrating chamber 22 in which it is concentrated to 80-85 per cent. by means of hot air admitted through a pipe 12 and valve 13. Acid continuously overflows from this chamber to a chamber 23 in which it is concentrated to 94-96 per cent. by hot gases entering through a valve 14. The acid then passes to a decolorizing chamber 18 where it is subjected to superheated steam generated in a coil 6 and supplied through a pipe 7. The acid is decolorized and its concentration lowered to 92-93 per cent. by a condensation from the steam. Finally, the acid is aerated in a vessel 19 by means of air supplied through a valve 10 which concentrates. it to 93-94 per cent., and is removed to a vessel 15. Alternatively, hot air may be used for the final treatment to obtain an acid of higher concentration. The hot combustion gases are supplied from a furnace 4 which also heats thecoil 6.
