Abstract
198,545. Hechenbleikner, I., and Oliver, T. C. May 13, 1922. Acids, concentrating.-Sulphuric acid which has been used in refining petroleum and treated to recover part of the hydrocarbons, is concentrated by blowing hot air through it to a point somewhat below the concentration, near 57‹ BaumÚ, at which foaming and charring of the hydrocarbons take place. The bulk of the hydrocarbons are driven off by this treatment and the acid is further concentrated in the second apparatus. The first concentration takes place in a chamber A of acid-resisting brick provided with perforated earthenware pipes 17 through which hot air can be blown. The acid enters through a tower 18, in which it is preheated by the escaping fumes, and which may be packed or not as desired. The partly concentrated acid, freed from the hydrocarbons, passes to an " acid egg " C, and thence to a second chamber B like the chamber A, and provided with a preheating entrance tower 27.
