Abstract
Hydrofluoric acid is produced by treating fluorspar with hot sulphuric acid, charging the slurry into a reaction furnace to convert it into gypsum and hydrofluoric acid and injecting sulphuric acid into the gases issuing from the reaction chamber before they are passed to a condensation stage. After this treatment the gases may be subjected to simultaneous filtration and washing. The gases are preferably centrifuged with the sulphuric acid and the sulphuric acid may be recovered by partial condensation. Water formed in the partial condensation may be used to dilute oleum supplied to the sulphuric acid prior to injection. The sulphuric acid used for treating the fluorspar may be added to that recovered by the partial condensation and also that formed by diluting the oleum, and the resultant liquid used for treating the fluorspar. The liquid used for treating the fluorspar may be heated by heat given out during the condensation and the oleum dilution.
