Abstract
512,239. Stapling continuous filaments. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges.). Jan. 26, 1938, No. 2512. Drawings to Specification. [Class 120 (iii)] A sliver of staple fibre is formed from a band of continuous filaments by a single or manifold tearing operation, the draft or the first draft between the feed and tearing rollers being less than 2.5. Preferably the percentage difference between the peripheral speeds of the feed and draft rollers calculated on the speed of the former is about twice the percentage extensibility of the filaments, e.g., when the extensibility is about 20 per cent the best draft is about 1.4. and when the band is torn by a manifold tearing operation, at each draft subsequently to the first the draft is adjusted to suit the changed extensibility of the fibres. By this means it is stated that a sliver is obtained having a high proportion of fibres within the limits of staple length required and examples of drafts &c, are given. The sliver produced may be crimped.
