Abstract
403,738. Stapling continuous filaments by drawing. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, and HALE, F. C., c/o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. July 4, 1932, No. 18825. [Class 120 (iii).] Yarn of a fibrous character is obtained by subjecting a plurality of continuous filaments having thin portions at intervals along their length to a breaking load so as to break the filaments at the thin portions, the fibres being associated as a continuous end. Preferably a series of yarns are fed simultaneously to the breaking means, the thin portions of the different yarns being arranged in staggered relationship so as to maintain the continuity of the yarns, which may be further drawn and then twisted, or may be wound and subsequently drawn and spun. Continuous filaments having thin portions at regular intervals may be produced by the means described in Specifications 321,762, [Class 120 (iii), Yarns &c.], 370,017 and 371,910 ; the denier ratio of thin to thick portions is preferably 1.1-1.5 to 1. Roughening media such as kieselguhr, talc, pumice, carborundum and emery may be combined with the filaments, preferably during their formation, also hygroscopic materials as described in Specification 387,003, Yarns a-d are fed to two pairs of rollers 6, 7 and 8, 9 of which the second pair rotate faster than the first pair, whereby the filaments are broken at their thin points. The combined fibres f are twisted and wound on the bobbin 11. The broken filaments may be supported by a travelling band, or rollers. According to the Provisional Specification, false twist may be applied to the filaments during the breaking operation if desired. Specification 372,797 also is referred to.
