Abstract

509,331. Fusible cut-outs. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 4, 1938, Nos. 3584 and 3585. Convention dates, Feb. 4, 1937, and Feb. 10, 1937. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] High-tension D.C. or A.C. circuits are protected by two fusible cut-outs in series in the same cartridge. One deals with overloads and is of the type in which the fuse wire is heatinsulatingly mounted and has a cover releasable by vapour pressure and the other deals with short-circuits and is of the type in which the fusible conductor is embedded in granular material of good thermal conductivity. Both fuses may be provided with a single casing, as shown in Fig. 1. The cap 4, which is blown off when the overload fuse 1. blows may be replaced by a silencer. To avoid excessive length of the combined cut-out, the fusible member of the overload part may be in a tortuous channel which may be provided at intervals along its length with stoppers which are blown out by excessive pressure, Fig. 2 (not shown). In modified arrangements, Figs. 3 and 4, the channel is helical and has one side formed by a strip 10, 12 designed to be blown off in the case of a short-circuit.
