Abstract

562,745. Fusible cut-outs. HAEFELFINGER, A. April 1, 1943, No. 5250. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Fusible cut-outs suitable for H.T. circuits normally carrying very low currents are adapted to be ruptured by the arc set up between the fuse and an adjacent auxiliary conductor or conductors, which may also be fusible, when the potential between them rises due to operation of another cutout in series with the fuse, the arrangement enabling a mechanically-robust construction of fuse to be employed. The fuse 6 is in series with a heating coil 8 of a bimetal latch 11 and contacts 9, 10 in the main circuit between the ring 4 and cap 2 of the fuse box 1, which may contain an arcquenching medium. The point 5 of an auxiliary conductor 16 connected to ring 4 is in proximity to the fuse 6, if desired, with an interposed dielectric screen 15. When the contacts 9, 10 open on overload, the potential increases across the gap between 5, 6 and the resulting arc destroys the fuse 6. The mechanical cut-out 7 may be replaced by an auxiliary fuse in a protective metal casing, or by an incandescent lamp, which may be in a separate container on the end of the box 1, Fig. 3 (not shown), or interpolated between the two sections of fuse 6, with the auxiliary conductor having points adjacent each section and shunting the auxiliary fuse, Fig. 2 (not shown). A spark-gap may shunt the cut-out in order to prevent excessive voltage when opened.
