Abstract

507,801. Making vehicle wheels.- DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and GOODYEAR, C. E. May 24, 1938, Nos. 15440/38 and 8926/39. [Class 83 (ii)] A vehicle wheel of the kind consisting of a tyre supporting rim portion formed integrally with a wheel body portion is formed from a metal strip having three arms 1, 2, 3 extending from a common centre line in substantially Y-formation by first removing marginal portions 5 from the arm 1, bending the strip to form an annulus, welding the abutting ends and then shaping the annulus (as by means of profiling rolls) to form the tyre retaining rim and the integral securing flange. Bolt holes 8 and a stiffening flange 9 may be formed in the wheel body portion. The removed portions 5 are triangular and of such a size that when the strip is bent into an annulus, the sides of the gap abut and may be welded together. In another form, the removed triangular portions are relatively long so that the finished wheel has a securing flange 1 with a corrugated edge, Fig. 6. In a modified form of strip, the arm 2 is shorter than the arms 1 and 3 in order to form a wheel as shown in Fig. 14.
