[Class 143] [Also in Group XV] A letter or like balance comprises a beam having a straight upper edge 2, a semicircular lower portion 3 merging into a hooked lettercarrying extremity 7, weighted gravity pointers 9 at each side mounted on a common pivot 8 and co-operating with differently marked scales 12, a thumb and finger grip 15 constituting the fulcrum of the beam and a notch 16 in the top edge of the beam to receive an extra weight for increasing the weighing range. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the indicators are constituted by inverted V -shaped members having index marks 20 and are connected by an arcshaped weight 19.' The straight edge of the beam may be extended as shown in Fig. 1 to form a paper knife 6.
