Counting by weighing. - In an automatic weighing- apparatus capable of being used for counting, a lever of the weighing system, for example, the intermediate lever 4 is provided with, or is capable of having attached thereto, an arm 7 carrying a ratio pan 8 for receiving a number of articles to be counted, and the weight - indicating mechanism incorporates an auxiliary pointer 10 capable of being set and maintained in position, and is employed in connection with a graduated scale 15 provided with a cursor 16. The graduated scale 15 may be a rotatable polygonal bar mounted on brackets 14 and graduated on each face; for example, the first face may be graduated along the upper edge with the consecutive numerals 1 to 25 and on the lower edge with the corresponding multiples of 72, the numeral 72 representing the multiplication in the leverage effect upon the indicator when the ratio pan 8 is used instead of the platform 1. The auxiliary pointer is maintained in set position by a pinion thereon engaging teeth on a stationary disc 13. In using the apparatus, a sufficient number of articles is placed in the ratio pan 8 to give the usual weight-indicating pointer 9 a considerable deflection and the auxiliary pointer 10 is then rotated by a crank handle 11<a> into coincidence with the pointer 9. The articles in the ratio pan are removed and counted and the cursor 16 is adjusted to the corresponding number on the upper edge of a face of the bar 15. The articles to be counted are now added to the platform until the two pointers again coincide when the number of articles may be read off by the cursor on the lower edge of the operative face.
