Abstract

502,864. Cooling cylinders. ROWLEDGE, A. J. Sept. 23, 1937, No. 25830. Addition to 476,487. [Class 7 (ii)] In an engine having one or more banks or rows of cylinders, passages F which convey cooling air to the rear of the cylinders, as described in the parent Specification, are supplied by conduits D extending along the bases of the cylinders. In the four bank radial-cylinder engine shown, air, collected by a scoop C passes partly directly to a chamber B<3>, and partly to the rear of the engine and thence to chambers D, B<1>. The passages F end in baffles, directing the air round the cylinder fins, which are thus cooled by streams of air flowing in opposite directions. The exit chambers B<2>, B<4>, are separated from the admission chambers by baffles c extending to the cylinder heads. Specification 476,489, [Group XII], is referred to.
