502,497. Orthopµdic footwear. VISCHER, F., and REITER, L. Sept. 20, 1937, No. 25503. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1936. [Class 17 (ii)] Stiffening means constituting lateral buttresses for the metatarsal bones to prevent spreading of the foot are incorporated in a shoe upper on both sides in the regions of the main joints of the first and fifth metatarsal bones but not extending up to the lacing opening. Stiffening elements b of fabric such as that employed in stiffening hats, of impregnated leather, fibrous material, felt or metal are secured in the shoe between the upper and lining and are secured to a carrier strip a of buckram extending around the heel end of the shoe from side to side. The stiffening elements may comprise several layers of material b, b<1> of decreasing size and other elements e, e<1> may be secured to the carrier strip a at either side of the heel or to extend around the heel end of the shoe.
