Abstract

501,588. Regulating. AMERY, G. Aug. 25, 1937, No. 23350. [Class 7 (vi)] In fuel-injection apparatus comprising a fuel pump supplying the injection nozzles through a distributing-valve, means are provided for advancing the timing of this valve automatically in accordance with increase of fuel pressure. In the form shown, a fuel pump comprising cam-actuated plungers 41, 45 draws in fuel through ports 59, 57 and discharges it past valves 55 into pipes 95 leading to the distributing- valve casing 15, from which the fuel is conveyed by pipes 94 to the injection valves. Another pipe 96 conveys fuel to a control chamber 27, where it acts through a plunger 78 to move a helical gear 71 axially, so as to give an angular advance to a shaft 73 driving the cam 72 which actuates the distributing-valves, these consisting of radially-arranged piston valves (not shown) actuated by the cam as described in Specification 468,360. The cam 72 may also be adjusted axially by hand through a plunger 83. The helical gear 71 engages a similar gear on a parallel shaft, the latter gear being also adjustable by hand axially along helical splines connecting it to its shaft. The fuel pressure is itself regulated by a -centrifugal governor 23 which acts on a pressure-relief valve 24 as described in Specification 468,372, [Group XXVIII]. The construction of fuel pump and injection nozzles are described in Specifications 501,632 ; and 501,633, [Group XXVIII].
