[Class 7 (vi)] In compression-ignition oil engines, the pressure produced by the pump circulating the cooling-water is used for controlling the timing of the fuel-injection pump. As shown in Fig. 1, the pressure at the outlet a of the cooling-water pump b is transmitted by a pipe a<1> to a spring- controlled diaphragm arranged in a chamber c and connected by links e, f, g to means for varying the angular relationship of the driving- gear of the fuel pumps, such as the adjustment of the gear along helical splines on its driving- shaft as described in Specification 380,449. A cam or crank may be interposed between the diaphragm and the linkwork actuated thereby.
