[Class 7 (ii)] To vary the compression ratio either the main piston itself or the upper portion of a two part piston is adjusted relatively to the cylinder head. When adjusting the main piston through the medium of a two-part screwed connecting rod a rotary motion is imparted to the piston by teeth that engage slots provided along the length of a piston skirt. When using a two-part piston, the rod of the upper part has a screw connection with the lower part and rotary movement is imparted to the rod by a toothed rack which engages teeth cut along the length of the rod. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the piston 6 is rotated relatively to its support 15 by toothed gearing 17, 18, the wheel 18 being mounted on a flexibly-actuated shaft 19 connected by gearing to an operating shaft 21. The mechanism for actuating the shaft 21 from the engine cam shaft is shown in Fig. 5. It comprises a clutch part 24 carried by the cam shaft and engaged by one or other of two cone-shaped clutch parts 26 carried by a screwthreaded shaft 30 in engagement with a toothed sector 29. The sector is controlled by a leverarm 23 and rotary movement of the shaft 30 is transmitted to the shaft 21 by splines and toothed gearing 28. An engine using the various means for varying the compression ratio may be charged by a blower driven electrically or from the crank shaft.
