Abstract
The diesel engine makes double use of the power of combustion, having an open planetary mechanism acting both as driving and driven mechanisms, and thus transmitting force in the downwards direction as with crankshaft movement. The parabolic scavenger air movement at the cylinder head end on the other hand causes force to be transmitted upwards, i.e. in the opposite direction, thus making more used of the fuel. The lightweight piston is used to compress air both above and below it, thus reducing oscillating power losses. The large annulus now with internal teeth, causes the sun wheel not only to make four revolutions per rotor revolution instead of two as before, but also allows it to be turned round, so that the working path if towards the right of the cylinder. The varying force on this path is thus positively used.
