500,295. Subaqueous burners. SEE, T. S., TEGARDEN, J. E., and WILLIAMS, A. Aug. 6, 1937, No. 21731. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1936. [Class 75 (i)] In a submersible burner for heating liquids comprising a combustion chamber 8 having outlets 10 for the combustion products, air is supplied by a blower through a pipe 20, an annular passage 22 and a perforated plate 6 to the chamber 8 to clear the burner of liquid and through a pipe 16 and an opening 18 to the inner pipe 4 and fuel is supplied through a pipe 12 to a jet 14 and is ignited by an electric igniter 26 to project a flame into the chamber 8, and, finally, the main supply of fuel is pre-mixed with the air supplied through the pipe 20. The fuel supply and ignition are thermostatically started and stopped for maintaining a predetermined temperature of the liquid. Alternatively, all the fuel is supplied through the jet 14, the flow of fuel being increased after ignition. In this case the flow of fuel is increased or decreased thermostatically so that the igniter only comes into operation at the beginning of each period of running. Gaseous, or atomized or vaporized liquid, fuel may be used. The burner may be made of corrosion-and heat-resisting materials, e.g. a high nickel, molybdenum, chromium steel for heating acid pickling baths.
