Abstract
500,191. Converting ; control systems for consumption apparatus. LA VERRERIE SCIENTIFIQUE., and LENZ, P. July 28, 1937, Nos. 20889 and 20890. Convention dates, July 28, and July 22. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Switching control.-A rectifying arrangement comprises a discharge device 1 having one or more auxiliary anodes 15, Fig. 1, connected through charged condensers 18 to the main anodes to enable the discharge to be rapidly extinguished. In normal operation the auxiliary anodes are blocked by grid control. As shown a welding transformer 6 is supplied and extinction of the discharge is effected in dependence on the load current bv means of a relay 27 energized from a resistance 30 in the load circuit. This relay short circuits the transformer 12 supplying grid potentials to the main anodes 3 to allow these to be blocked by a source of bias 13, and energizes a relay 37 which operates after a time delay to remove a short circuit from a transformer 26 supplying grid potentials to the anodes 15 which become conductive to extinguish the main discharge. A maintaining circuit 33, 34 for the relay 27 is provided and may be arranged to reset the relay after a time delay ready for a fresh actuation. In a modification one auxiliary anode is used and the control potential for this is applied through an auxiliary discharge device brought into operation by the relay 27 and controlled in dependence on the current in a main anode circuit. In a further modification, Fig. 3, both relays are replaced by auxiliary valves. Operation is initiated by the actuation of a relay 68 under the control of a pedal or similar device. Extinction of the main discharge is initiated by a valve 56, controlled in dependence on load current and voltage, which applied a negative bias to the grids controlling the main anodes, and through a transformer 72 applies a time delayed control potential to the valve 45 which initiates discharge from the auxiliary anode 15 to extinguish the main discharge. The valve 45 is extinguished by a relay 76 which temporarily short circuits the valve.
