Abstract
Hydrogen sulphide and like substances are removed from gases, e.g. coal gas, by subjecting them to the action of active carbon with which is associated iron oxide and/or hydroxide. The hydrogen sulphide and the like is adsorbed by the carbon and reacts with the iron oxide. A suitable catalyst is obtained by saturating a porous active carbon with an iron compound, e.g. ferrous sulphate and then precipitating ferrous hydroxide in situ. If desired the material may be heated to dehydrate the hydroxide, at least in part. The carbon may be regenerated by washing out soluble compounds, reactivating and reimpregnating, or by heating. The material may adsorb up to 10 per cent of hydrogen sulphide by weight.
