Abstract
547,451. Treating coke. WALKER, R., WILKIN, C. R., and HOWELL, A. K. May 29, 1941, No. 6894. [Class 50] An improved coke is obtained by treating porous or high temperature coke with a powdered combustible such as coal dust with or without an activating agent such as caustic soda by the aid of a liquid carrier, a vacuum being used to evacuate the pores of the coke so that it more readily absorbs the slurry. In an example, the slurry contains coal dust 45 per cent, water 48 per cent, tar 6 per cent, and caustic soda 1 per cent. The slurry is fed from a mixing tank a, and the coke from a bunker b into an impregnating vessel c closed by doors e and j. A vacuum is created by a pump d, and the impregnated coke is discharged through door e into a bunker or drier s when it is dried by the passage of water or flue gases. Perforated tubes q facilitate access of the slurry to the coke and withdrawal of the air from the coke. A pump g recirculates the slurry drained by pipe f from the treating vessel to the tank a. An overflow pipe o is provided.
