[Class 140] Timber, located in a closed treatment chamber, is subjected to the available products of a low temperature wood carbonization retort, which may be in piped communication with the treatment chamber, and which contains sufficient wood to dry and preserve the timber. The timber is thus subjected to the action of steam mixed with various gases consisting mainly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and gaseous hydrocarbons such as methane, ethylene and ethane, which serve to dry the timber, destroy the germs therein and to open the pores of the timber for the reception of the later products of the wood carbonization process which consists of compounds of carbon with hydrogen and oxygen and hydrocarbons which are driven off in vapour form and serve to preserve the timber. In the apparatus shown, waste wood is subjected to low temperature carbonization in an internally fired retort 1, Fig. 1, provided with regulable air inlets 10 and chimneys 3, a baffle ring 11 confining the wood and regulable discharge pipes 5 for the products of carbonization. These pipes lead through a pump 8 to a main pipe 7 which extends into a treatment chamber 2, Fig. 2, where the products are discharged upon the stacked timber 16 via outlets 9 in said pipe. The chamber 2 has removable doors at opposite ends so that trolleys 15 bearing the wood may be run in and out on rails 14 and it is provided also with a draining- channel 19 and regulable vents 20.
