498,099. Fused silica; arc heating electrodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., GOODCHILD, J. H., and PARTRIDGE, J. H. Dec. 8, 1937, No. 33986. [Class 56] [Also in Group XI] A method of making an article of fused silica, or like refractory siliceous vitreous material, comprises the step of heating the material in an electric arc between carbons cored with a mixture containing a substantial proportion of silicon or a compound of silicon which burns to silica in the arc, but containing substantially no material which reacts with melting silica and, in particular, substantially no alkaline earth or oxidizable cerium compound. A suitable composition for the core is technically pure silicon mixed with carbon, the proportion of silicon being from 25- 75 per cent but is preferably 50 per cent. Silicon carbide also may be used.
