Abstract

27,620. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Dec. 8. Arc-lamp electrodes.-The formation of non- conducting slags on electrodes containing titanium is prevented by the presence of a small proportion, say two per cent, of copper or a slightly larger proportion of a copper compound. The electrodes may contain carbon, and the titanium may he in the form of metal, of a compound, or of a mixture of these; commercial titanium carbide, containing free metal, or carbide made in an electric resistance furnace and containing free carbon, may he used. The copper or copper compound may be added to the carbide-forming materials before heating or to the prepared materials; the copper may he in the form of an embedded wire. Specification 9190/04 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the copper may he in the form of a shell. made of the metal itself or of an alloy with nickel or other metal.
