Abstract

15,757. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. July 8. Boron suboxide is prepared by reducing a boron compound or a borate with an oxidizable silicon material, such as elemental silicon or silicon monoxide. It is preferred to mix intimately the borate and silicon material, and to place the mixture in an electric furnace 1 lined with paper 2 to contain and allow for the easy removal of the charge. The electrodes 4, 5 are connected at starting by a graphite rod 6 or a core of pieces of silicon, and in operation the current is adjusted to maintain the temperature at the boiling-point of the mixture. The fused material is crushed, treated with dilute alkali, and washed.
