Abstract

<PICT:0393283/III/1> A silicon carbide resistor is made of grains having a silicon carbide content of 99 per cent or greater. In order to purify the grain, crude lump silicon carbide is crushed and treated with an acid, such as sulphuric acid, to remove surface impurities. For further purification, the grain may be treated with a solution of sodium hydroxide or other alkali. In an example, 32,5 per cent of 120-mesh silicon carbide, acid and alkali washed, is mixed with 65 per cent of 280-mesh silicon carbide powder, acid and alkali washed, and 2,5 per cent of lamp-black. The grain is mixed with a temporary binder such as sodium silicate, moulded, and given a preliminary baking at 600 DEG C. The resistors are then removed from the mould and dipped in a slip or slurry containing fine sand, carbon, and water. The coated resistors 4 are placed in a furnace consisting of a refractory bottom 1 covered to a depth of about two inches with a mixture 3 of fine silica and carbon in the proportion of three parts of silica to one part of carbon. The resistors 4 are placed end to end between electrodes 2, and joined by means of graphite blocks 5 and a paste of graphite, silicon, and sodium silicate. The resistors are then covered with a further layer of silica and carbon mixture and current is passed between the electrodes 2, a temperature of about 2000 DEG C. or 2200 DEG C. being attained. The sodium silicate employed as a temporary binder is decomposed, and vaporization of the silicon carbide takes place, causing recrystallization which binds the particles together into a strong coherent mass.
