Abstract
546,641. Electrical insulating material. NORTON CO. Oct. 17, 1940, No. 15401. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1939. [Class 22] A refractory insulating material comprises crystalline magnesia in granular form containing 0.3-5 per cent. by weight of silica and 0.5-3 per cent. of lime and its total iron content, calculated as ferric oxide, is less than 0.2 per cent. by weight and is substantially free from metallic iron and its lower oxides. The raw magnesia containing not over 0.5 per cent. of iron oxide, together with silica and lime is melted and crystallized, crushed to a granular condition, metallic iron and magnetic oxide of iron are removed and the material is roasted under oxidizing conditions. The fusion may be at a temperature (above 2600‹C.) high enough to boil off metallic iron. After crystallization the outer zone and the extreme centre or pipe of the ingot are removed and discarded.
