Abstract
A light, porous, heat- and sound-insulating sheet material comprises a mixture of mineral and vegetable fibres united by a binder containing bentonite and magnesium oxysulphate or calcined magnesium oxide. Waste asbestos fibres and excelsior or coarse wood slivers and fibres rejected in the manufacture of paper pulp are mixed dry with bentonite, and, if desired, sawdust, then mixed or sprayed with an aqueous emulsion or foam containing calcined magnesium oxide, bentonite, and, if desired, magnesium sulphate. The resulting fibrous mixture is lightly rolled or moulded to shape, and dried under light pressure between oiled steel sheets. A thin sheet of corrosion-resistant ferrous metal alloy may be secured, e.g. with bitumen, to one or both faces of the slab.
