Abstract
<PICT:0496615/III/1> Graphite or carbon articles such as electrodes, particularly for spectrum analysis, are purified by indirect electrical heating at a temperature above 2100 DEG C. and up to about 2350 DEG C. at a pressure below 10 ins. of mercury. A suitable furnace comprises a water-jacketed metal cylinder 1 with detachable water-cooled heads 2 and 3, the lower one of which is insulated from the cylinder. Screwed on to the heads are graphite discs 6 and 7 forming part of a graphite cylinder 8 which carries an inner container 10 in which the electrodes &c. 11 are placed. The graphite cylinder is heated by the passage of an electric current and a vacuum is applied via pipe 18. A window 16 is provided in the end of tube 17 extending through the head 3 whereby the temperature can be measured by an optical pyrometer. The pressure is preferably reduced below 2 ins. of mercury but not below 0,5 ins., and the temperature is held at the required level for 5-15 minutes. Specifications 19398/06 and 13021/11, [both in Class 90], are referred to.
