Abstract

548,350. Welding glass. RAKOS, A. March 5, 1941, No. 3017. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXII] In a method of welding glass by contacting the work at the joint with one or more resistance electrodes heated by the passage therethrough of an electric current to a temperature sufficient to heat the parts to welding or soldering temperatures, an additional source of heat is applied to the work at the place where union is to be effected substantially simultaneously with the electrode, the source being of such intensity or disposed at such a distance from the work that it is not itself capable of heating the work to uniting temperature. The resistance electrodes may consist of carbon, graphite or of a metallic carbide and the additional source of heat may consist of one or more gas flames with a reducing action such as coal gas or industrial gas, hydrogen, . acetylene, &c. or electric heating means.
