413,698. Crucible furnaces. SMETHURST, H., 147, Victoria Road, Fallowfield, BANCROFT, F. E., 19, Delaine Road, Withington, both in Manchester, BURROWS, G., Lynton, Fownhope Avenue, Sale, Cheshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 19, 1933, No. 1814. [Class 51 (ii).] Casings.-A melting crucible 34 and an electric heater are arranged in a vacuum-tight chamber 1 provided with at least one door provided with a readily dismountable high vacuum seal and containing a fluid cooled crucible support 33. The chamber is connected at 3 to a diffusion pump constructed according to Specification 407,503, [Group XXVIII]. The pressure in the chamber 1 is 10-<3> or 10-<4> mm. and the chamber and all the internal members except the crucible are maintained by circulating liquid at a temperature below 100‹ C. The chamber is provided with doors 10, 23, 42, 47 and the door 23 is fitted with doors 45, 46. The doors are sealed as described in Specification 413,364, [Group XXVI]. The chamber is fitted with a sight tube 8 and with a water jacket 4 having a helical baffle 5. Doors 10, 23, 45 and the crucible support 33 are water jacketted also. The door 10 carries a relief valve 18 and a door 48 to which is welded a water-cooled sublimation collector 15 fitted with a vacuum sealed sighting window 120 as described in Specification 414,053, [Group XXII]. The door 48 is sealed by bitumen or wax 53a. The crucible 34 is arranged in an outer crucible 35 and is separated from it by zircon sand. The outlet 37 is controlled by a water cooled gate 40 as described in Specification 413,743. A support 25 for the ingot mould 26 is formed integrally with the door 45 and has a double helical rib 106 which forms with an external sleeve 107 a closed path for cooling water. A vacuum sealed plug 49 may be removed to enable a rod to be inserted to raise the plug 111 and the ingot. A gauze or corrugated copper liner 112 is inserted between the mould and the support 25 to allow for expansion. The connection 2 to the diffusion pump contains a removable baffle 135 and is provided with an opening 136 for a Pirani gauge 137 and an opening 138 for a vacuum gauge of the discharge tube type.
