Abstract

496,603. Cathode - ray tubes. KLEMPERER, O., and WRIGHT, W. D. Aug. 4, 1937, No. 21457. Addition to 480,857. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron lens which consists of coaxial cylindrical electrodes, the ratio of the effective diameters of which is between 1À5 : 1 and 2À5: 1, as described in the parent Specification, the electrode which has the smaller effective diameter is provided with a diaphragm intermediate its length to reduce longitudinal spherical aberration. The lens may consist of two electrodes 8, 9, Fig. 1, having the same diameter ; the electrode 8 is given the higher potential and contains the more nearly parallel of the incident and emergent beams. A diaphragm 10 in the electrode 8 has an aperture, the diameter of which is half that of the electrode 8, and is spaced from the end adjacent the electrode 9 a distance which is between half and twice, but is preferably equal to, the radius of the electrode 9. The diaphragm may be of frusto-conical or spherical shape.
