Abstract

Artificial materials, especially for covering floors and walls, are prepared by working up a polymerizable functional derivative of an acid of the type of crotylidene cyanacetic acid, in particular an ester thereof, with a filling material and a polymerization catalyst. Other film-forming agents may be present such as polyvinyl chloride and acetate, cellulose esters, nitrocellulose, colophony or colophony glycerine esters. The derivative of the acid and the filler may be worked up together, applied, and then coated with catalyst. Suitable fillers include stone flour, talc, chalk, asbestos fibre, sawdust and corkdust with or without pigments such as iron or chromium oxide. Suitable catalysts include piperidine, diethylamine, triethylamine, caustic alkalies, alkali carbonates, alkaline earth hydroxides, secondary sodium phosphate, ammonia sodium carbonate, borax or triethanolamine. In an example, an aqueous emulsion of crotylidene cyanacetic acid butyl ester is kneaded with a mixture of stone flour, wood flour, and iron or chromium oxide wetted with an aqueous solution of borax.
