Abstract

A mixture of a vinyl compound and a vinyl compound which contains a further unsaturated linkage that is neither a vinyl linkage nor is conjugated to the vinyl linkage, is polymerized and the interpolymer subsequently vulcanized. Suitable unsaturated vinyl compounds include vinyl b -b 1-dimethylacrylate, vinyl crotonate, and isobutenyl vinyl ketone; suitable vinyl compounds include vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethyl ether, styrene, ethyl acrylate, vinyl methyl ketone or vinyl ethyl ketone. Softening agents may be present. In examples: (1) an interpolymer of ethyl acrylate and vinyl b - b 1 - dimethylacrylate, formed in emulsion, is mixed with sulphur, zinc oxide, and heavy spar and used to armour cables, the mass being heated; an interpolymer of vinyl chloride and isobutenyl vinyl ketone, formed in emulsion, is kneaded with a mixture of methylene chloride and ethylene glycol formal, blended with sulphur and zinc white, formed into plates and tubes and then heated; (3) an interpolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl dimethylacrylate is plasticized with the neutral phthalic acid ester of glycol mono-ethyl ether, blended with sulphur, zinc oxide and ethyl acetate, coated onto a fabric and then heated.
