Abstract
494,340. Bright - annealing furnaces. BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., LOBLEY, A. G., and ROBIETTE, A. G. E. March 22, 1937, No. 8441. [Class 51 (ii)] Protective gas under pressure is circulated through the heat-treatment chamber a and a previously heated porous refractory lining a<1> of an annealing furnace to expel impurities from the latter, and is purified in a heated chamber g<1> where the impurities react with reducing constituents of the gas and are then absorbed by material in a drying or de-contaminating chamber g<2> which may itself absorb unburnt impurities in the gas and be used without the chamber g<1>. The lining a<1> is enclosed in a perforated shell a<2> and spaced from an outer metal casing d connected by pipes with the chambers gl, g<2> and a pump f<3>. The protective gas is produced by incomplete combustion in the chamber g<1> of air and gas supplied through pipes h<1> and its pressure in the chamber a prevents inflow of air during annealing.
