CONSTITUTION: Coal 1 introduced into dry distilling furnace 2 is dry-distilled at 600W700°C, and the resulting semicoke 3 is fed into activating furnace 4 to increase the performance as an adsorbent or a reducing agent. In furnace 4 semicoke 3 is activated with hot steam generated by the direct heat exchange of activated semicoke for semicoke cooling cold water 6 in activated semicoke cooler 5. Thus, the separate production of hot steam for activation is made unnecessary, and the amount of water and the quantity of heat required for activation can be reduced considerably. Exhaust gases 8 from furnaces 2, 4 are fed to burner 9 and burned.
