Abstract
<PICT:0494171/III/1> A saturator for producing coarsely crystalline ammonium sulphate from sulphuric acid and gases containing ammonia comprises a central gas inlet pipe 4 provided with a plurality of annularly-disposed distributing openings and a circulation pipe 12 arranged beneath the gas inlet pipe and containing means for circulating the liquid through the pipe and within the saturator, the gas inlet pipe being closed at its lower end by a substantially horizontal wall 8 around the edge of which outwardly and downwardly directed gas distributing openings 6 are arranged and the circulation pipe 12 being so constructed that together with a centrally disposed cone 15 it forms an annular upwardly and outwardly directed nozzle which directs the circulating liquid across the gas distributing openings. The liquid circulating means may comprise a propeller 18 mounted on a shaft 16. The circulating pipe 12 is preferably adjustable in height. A number of vertical guide walls 10 may be provided to prevent swirling of the liquid within the gas inlet pipe. Water may be introduced through a pipe 23 into a central pipe 9 in order to prevent the bath from entering the lower bearing of the propeller shaft 16.
