Abstract
890,977. Vertical steam boilers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Dec. 23, 1960 [Jan. 14, 1960], No. 1408/60. Class 123(2) A vertical steam boiler comprises a drum A containing water to a level H and in which is disposed a nest B of heating tubes enclosed in a shroud C from which a trunk D conveys watersteam mixture to separators E. At normal loads steam discharges upwardly from the separators and water downwardly to flow with incoming feed water down through the annular space G between the shroud and the drum to rise over the heating tubes. To ensure that a positive circulation is also maintained at low loads, when the small difference in static water head inside and outside the shroud may result in a free water level being formed in the lower end of the trunk D, the top of the shroud is provided with a ring of holes or slots J at the normal water level H. Water flows through the holes &c., to boost the circulation through the downcomer space. Entrainment of steam through the holes, &c., is prevented by the baffles shown.
