Abstract
493,709. Controlling aircraft. GALLAY, H. M. April 10, 1937, No. 10244. [Class 4] An external aerofoil flap is combined with a main wing having conventional inset ailerons and the flap extends from tip to tip of the wing, except in cases requiring local discontinuity, and is disposed behind or behind and below the trailing edge of the wing. As shown, the wing a has inset ailerons b and the auxiliary aerofoil d extends over the entire wing span. The aerofoil d may be adjusted mechanically, hydraulically, or electrically, and may have a chord À1 to À5 of that of the main wing. The aerofoil may be hinged at from 0 to À5 of its chord, the hinge axis being disposed 0 to À3 of the chord above or below the wing and its leading edge being located 0 to À1 below and in advance of the trailing edge of the wing. The wing and aerofoil may be tapered and the aerofoil is arranged so that it does not interfere with operation of the ailerons.
