Abstract

511,581. Controlling aircraft. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FRISE, L. G. Feb. 19, 1938, No. 5277. [Class 4] An aeroplane wing includes a flap hinged at its forward edge to the leading edge of the wing so as to form, in its retracted position, the foremost undersurface of the wing, and a linkage connecting the flap to the wing whereby the flap may be extended and the loads on the flap are applied directly to the main front spar of the wing. In one form, a flap 13 is extended, on rotation of a shaft 12 and straightening of links 15, 16. The links 15, 16, are formed with co-acting abutments so that the flap is locked in the open position. The links may abut against stops,' or locks may be provided for holding the flap in either or both the extended and retracted positions. In a modification, the hinge between the two links lies in line with or slightly beyond the line joining the centres of the two ends of the links so that, when retracted, forces on the flap are not transmitted to the operating mechanism.
