486,954. Controlling aircraft. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and FENTON, G. B. Nov. 11, 1936, No. 30776. [Class 4] Means for laterally controlling aircraft include main flaps a<1>, b<1>, upper and lower subsidiary flaps c, c<1> and d, d<1> adapted to be raised and lowered, respectively, with respect to the main flaps and means for operating the subsidiary flaps independently of the main flaps and adapted to raise the upper subsidiary flap on one side of the machine and lower the lower subsidiary flap on the other side while the remaining flaps remain against the main flaps and vice versa. The subsidiary flaps may be disposed outward of flaps a<2> connected with the flaps a<1>, b<1> so that when the flaps a<1> b<1>, are depressed the flaps a2 are depressed relatively to the flaps a<1>, b<1>. The flaps at, b<1> may form slots with the wing during operation. The subsidiary flaps may be formed by the split trailing edge of the main flaps.
