Abstract
454,556. Controlling aircraft. MACDONALD, R., 81, South Audley Street, Mayfair, London. March 27, 1935, No. 9544. [Class 4] An aeroplane has wings of variable effective area comprising fixed parts 2, Fig. 2, and movable parts 5 which are pivoted near the wing tips at 9 so as to be capable of being drawn rearwardly, the inner edges of the movable parts 5 being guided in tracks 7 secured to the sides of the body and arranged to permit tilting of the planes 5 when fully extended. The auxiliary wings 5 are provided with flaps 4. In another form, Fig. 2, a subwing 14 is provided with adjustable flaps 13, 15 of which flap 13 serves to assist the outward movement of the sub wing and is adjustable in the fully extended position, Fig. 2(c) to open or close a slot between the main and sub-wings. Fig. 3 shows a subwing partially housed within the main wing and either arranged or not to form a slot when fully extended. Fig. 4 shows a guide track 23 for a sub-wing 22 which is pivotally mounted on the fuselage at 24 and adjustable in a guide 25. In a modification, a sub-wing is guided in a fixed channel by a ball-ended pin and may be adjusted in incidence without movement of the channel. The auxiliary wing 5 may be mounted above the main plane. The aerofoils may have a stressed skin covering consisting of a layer of wire gauze sandwiched between sheets of metal foil and means may be provided for passing an electric current through the covering for removing ice.
