Abstract
492,325. Adjustably securing cams on shafts. EYRE, D., and ROBINSON, N. R. March 23, 1937, No. 8523. [Class 80 (ii)] In an ignition-timer for an internal-combustion engine, a vernier adjusting means for varying the angular relation of a contactbreaker cam D<1> on its shaft A comprises an intermediate disc B<1>, having on its opposed faces oppositely-directed ratchet teeth differing in number and engaging respectively with complementary teeth on a sleeve B, fixed to the shaft A, and on a sleeve B<2>, which latter drives the cam D<1> through facial teeth E, which are offset from a diameter so that the cam D<1> can be removed and replaced only in the same precise angular relationship without affecting the setting of the vernier-toothed coupling. The vernier discs are rigidly held together and the cam is held on the shaft by a screw D' threaded into an extension A<1> of the shaft A. A spring C, bearing on an expansible ring C<2>, permanently maintains the vernier discs in resilient engagement. After removal of the screw D<2>, vernier adjustment is effected by turning the cam D<1> alternately forwards and backwards so that the intermediate disc B<1> ratchets alternately over the driving and driven discs B, B<2>. The spring C permits this ratcheting, and also holds the vernier together if the cam D<1> is removed. In a modification, the cam is hollow and the vernier coupling is arranged inside it. The offset-tooth coupling is arranged between the lower vernier ring and the shaft, so that the vernier coupling stays with the cam when the latter is removed.
