Abstract

491,707. Optical systems. ZEISS, C., [Firm of]. March 10, 1938, No. 7444. Convention date, March 18, 1937. [Class 97 (i)] In an optical square comprising two plane reflecting surfaces for deviating at right-angles a ray pencil the plane of which intersects the reflecting surfaces in two straight lines including an angle of 45‹, the two reflecting surfaces are inclined at equal and opposite angles to the plane of the entering ray pencil, in order to produce deviation of the rays in a plane at rightangles to that in which they are deviated at right-angles. When the optical square consists of a pentagonal , prism, the reflecting surfaces of the prism are inclined as above and preferably the exit surface is so inclined that the emergent rays meet it at right-angles. The Figure shows a form in which the deviation in altitude can be varied, the mounts 7, 8 of the mirrors 5, 6 being mounted on shafts 9, 10, inclined at 45‹ to each other and connected by gearing 11, 12 so as to rotate through equal angles in opposite directions.
