491,324. Lifting-jacks; lifting ships' hatchway covers. TUTIN HATCHWAYS, Ltd., and BARRETT, H. R. March 18, 1937, No. 8045. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] The lifting-pillar of a jack carries a loadengaging clamp operated automatically by the weight of the load. The load 48, Fig. 4, for example a projection on the hatchway cover of a ship, rests on the head of a spring plunger 42 so that it is partly embraced by the fixed jaw 44. A pair of movable jaws 46 pivoted at 60 so as to straddle the fixed jaw, are turned down from the dotted to the full-line position and then the jack is operated to raise the screwed member 26. Initially, the plunger is held down by the load and the spring 52 is compressed. During this period the wedgeshaped portion 62 of the casing engages the wedge-shaped ends of the jaws and is forced thereover to clamp the jaws round the load. A piston 68 limits the upward movement of the plunger 42 under the action of the spring. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which a pair of jaws 46 are pivoted intermediate their ends at 76 and are fitted with wedge-shaped portions 82 engaging the member 38. Three other modifications show jaws generally similar to those of Fig. 7 but mounted on separate pivots and in one case pivoted at their extreme ends without the tail-pieces 80 of Fig. 7. The body of the jack comprises a carriage mounted on wheels so as to travel along a rail as described in Specification 491,325.
