Abstract
156,360. Chapman, W. A. Oct. 28, 1919. Jacks.-Relates to jacks of the kind in which the movable member is retained in any position on the standard by friction grip mechanism. The lifting-pillar A carries a gripper C formed with cross-bars 11, 12, between which the standard B passes, and maintained in inclined position by a spring 25. The pillar A is raised by a lever 15 which has its fulcrum in a bracket 18 formed on a member D provided with a gripper E similar to the gripper C. The fulcrum may be a block slidably mounted in guides on the top of the member D. The pillar A or member D can be adjusted on the standard by raising the short. arm of the appropriate gripper by means of the lever 15. The grippers can be released simultaneously by providing an inverted-U bolt 31 on the gripper E of such length that the lever 15 can just be inserted below its top into the socket 14 in the gripper C. The pillar A and member D may be connected by springs to avoid the necessity of separately raising the member D after each stroke of the lever. The lower gripper can also be released by pressure of the lower side of the lever 15 on a set screw 46. A similar setscrew may project from the lower side of the gripper C. In a modification, Fig. 8, the lower member D has a screw 41 engaging a sleeve 42 which bears against the pillar A and is turned by a spanner to raise the load. An auxiliary crutch 30, Fig. 1<a>, may be slidably mounted on a rod 47 carried 'by bars 48, 49 which project from the.pillar A.
